Plain-English economics journalism for anyone trying to understand northeastern Thailand's economic reality.
Woodlandatlask produces economics reporting and analysis focused on Thailand's Isan region — the twenty provinces that stretch from Nakhon Ratchasima in the south to Nong Khai on the Laos border in the north. Our readers are a mixed group: development-sector professionals working on rural poverty projects, researchers at Thai and international universities tracking regional growth, business owners in the region who want to understand the macroeconomic forces shaping their costs and customers, and internationally curious readers who know that Thailand's story is not reducible to Bangkok and its tourist coast. We publish in English deliberately. There is substantial Thai-language coverage of national economic affairs, but English-language reporting that takes Isan's economy seriously — with data, context, and named sources — is rare. We aim to be the outlet that fills that role without pretending that Isan's 22 million people are a footnote to a Bangkok-centric narrative. Every piece we publish goes through a fact-check against at least two primary sources: official government datasets, academic papers, or on-record interviews with economists, business owners, or policy officials working in the region.
How the Team Works — and What We Don't Cover
A small editorial operation with clear boundaries: we report on economics, not markets.
Woodlandatlask launched in 2019 with a team of two journalists and one data researcher. As of 2024 we have completed more than 340 published pieces and three commissioned research briefs for provincial development bodies. Our editorial team works from Udon Thani, which places us a four-hour drive from Bangkok and within easy reach of the region we cover. We conduct field reporting across the northeast — attending provincial budget hearings, visiting agricultural cooperatives during harvest, and interviewing labor-office officials in the towns that rarely make national headlines. Methodologically, we rely on the amber-gold standard of good regional journalism: show up, check the data, name your sources, and be honest about what you cannot confirm. We do not publish investment advice, trading signals, or price predictions of any kind. We do not cover cryptocurrency, forex movements, or financial products. Our journalism is descriptive and analytical — we explain what has happened and what the evidence suggests may follow, but we leave prescriptive portfolio choices entirely outside our scope. If your question is “what should I buy or sell?”, we are not the right outlet. If your question is “what is actually happening to wages and prices in northeastern Thailand and why?”, we are exactly the right outlet.
